One Day

You meet thousands of people
and none of them really touch you.
And then you meet one person and your life is changed forever.
-Love and Other Drugs

I met my one person May 17, 2005.
I was a flight attendant for a small charter company.
We had a contract with the government to move troops all over the world
I was on reserve that week and got a call for a trip to Frankfurt, Germany.
I did not want to go.
My mom always wanted to be a nurse as a little girl, but life got in the way.
Four girls later, and supporting my dad with his small business
she decided to go back to school to be a nurse.
This was the week she was graduating from nursing school.
I fought tooth and nail to get out of the trip.
I asked to switch with someone.
I just plainly said I'm not going.
Then the company said if I don't go, I'll be written up.
Not a good thing at all if I wanted to keep my job.

So I got on an airplane.
I was the inside crew.
He was the outside crew.
He wasn't suppose to be on that trip, someone else called in sick.
I had been in Germany for two nights waiting for the plane to get in.
He traveled from Tacoma, Washington for 20 plus hours and never got off the plane.
I had worked for the company for almost 2 years.
He had been there for over 5 years.
We had never met.

He said he had given up on love.
I had never been in love.
We got off the plane in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
I didn't even feel my feet touch the ground.

My life changed forever.
On an airplane.
